We don’t need no education

Why isn’t education being discussed in this election? It’s been completely absent from the primaries, and I doubt it’s going to come up in the general. Usually, I have to complain that there’s too much education talk, given the limited role of the federal government, but this year: nothing. And when it comes to education, nothing is not enough.
For my part, I think the two big questions for education policy are: how do you attract better people to the profession, and how do you encourage innovation? The latter is just a fancy way of saying that I don’t have any good answers to the more specific questions, of course, but there must be people out there who’ve got great ideas to try. We’ve got a big country and a lot of labs, let’s use them!
