The Honourable Thing

Posted by clubsodaandsalt on December 1, 2006

Why do Trinidadian luminaries have such a problem with resigning when the occasion demands it? Is being a big fish in a small pond that addictive?

Despite being put on trial for an attempt to pervert justice, the Chief Justice apparently has no plans to step down. This is ridiculous. How on earth can you use a judicial system to try the man charged with running it? The conflict of interest has already led us to the Privy Council before a trial could even get started.

I don’t have a strong opinion on Sharma’s innocence or guilt. Moreover, I think this should have been dealt with by the People’s Representatives, not by the police or the courts. Having said that, now that the Privy Council has ruled that there’s enough of a case to take matters to trial, I do wish that CJ Sharma would do the honourable thing and step down. I’m not going to hold my breath, though.
