In a surprising turn of events, CARICOM has done something useful — there will be a CARICOM visa issued during next year’s Cricket World Cup, similar to the Schengen visa in Europe. Unfortunately, this visa will only be issued during the CWC period. I’ve got to ask, why? Why can’t we just have one CARICOM visa and a unified visa policy, and then expand on that to eliminate immigration and customs checks on intra-group flights? Seems to me like tourism would get a huge boost if hopping around the Caribbean were made easier.
Anyway, I rarely get the chance to be optimistic when reading regional news, so I’m choosing to see this as an indiciation that good plans are in the works.
