More guns!

Posted by clubsodaandsalt on March 30, 2006

Why is it that business chambers’ reactions to crime in Trinidad always seem to involve demands for more use of the death penalty or giving them (businesspeople) guns?

On the last few days of the bloodiest month ever, members of chambers of commerce throughout south and central Trinidad are demanding licensed guns, the tabling of the DNA amendment bill and more dialogue between them and the Government on crime.

(From the Guardian, land of no permalinks.)

The DNA amendment bill would be helpful, it’s true, but why not talk about better schools? Why don’t I ever see the Mouttets and company talking about how the Chamber of Commerce is going to start a program to try to stem brain-drain, using their money to lure back college-educated ex-pats? It seems to me that rather than trying to use their money to invest in Trinidadian youth, the moneyed elite instead just use it to protect themselves. And then they wonder why they need to protect themselves so badly.

    Hard to say.

  2. When greed manifests itself in the form of the moneyed elite protecting its assets (while seeing about acquiring more) it’s one thing.

When it manifests in young, poor, people choosing the drug trade over “learning a trade” or breaking into the homes of the moneyed elite and taking their stuff, it’s another.

But greed is greed, and if anything is to change in this place folks need to acknowledge this.
