Subways And Stadiums

Posted by clubsodaandsalt on January 23, 2005

I actually generally like Mayor Mike, but comments like this annoy me a great deal:

The mayor was happy to answer [questions about the West Side Stadium] as he traveled around the city last week. “When people look back 10 years, 20 years, 30 years from now, they’ll say, ‘Thank God New Yorkers had the courage in tough times to go ahead and not listen to the naysayers, but to do the great things,’ ” Mr. Bloomberg told reporters on Tuesday at a day care center in Bushwick, Brooklyn. “The naysayers didn’t want Central Park, the naysayers didn’t want the Triborough Bridge, the naysayers didn’t want the subways and the water tunnels.”

I think the West Side Stadium is (1) a waste of real estate and (2) a waste of public funds. Having said that, it’s possible that I could be convinced otherwise (though not likely). But comparing a football stadium to water tunnels and subways – pieces of infrastructure without which NYC would simply cease to function? Give it a rest, Mayor. If you want to convince us to subsidize your friends to the tune of $600 million, at least TRY to keep it a little honest.
