Black Rage

Posted by clubsodaandsalt on January 31, 2004

The NYT magazine this week discusses the disenchantment that blacks in the South (though I imagine that the frustration extends north) are experiencing with today’s Democratic Party. This reminds me of the fact that the Dems are really bad at capitalizing on demographic trends that work to their advantage. I’ve complained in the past that liberalizing our immigration policy could do wonders for Dems, and so could, um, paying attention to black people. Why is it that the Democrats don’t stand up for minorities in the South by ensuring access in rural areas, fighting to make Election Day a holiday, working to make districting less unfair, and ending policies like felon disenfranchisement? Steve thinks it’s because the Dems are scared of having too many powerful minorities, but I’d like to think that that’s not the case.

The other interesting thing about the article is that while Dean is not supposed to appeal to blacks (conventional wisdom told me so!), it mentions that he is the only candidate who taps into the frustrations of southern blacks with the GOP and its infamous “Southern Strategy”. Perhaps he’s the only guy who can make the Dems competitive in the South (if you think that the Dems are going to win down there just by putting a guy with an accent up and without inspiring blacks to vote, you’re confused).
