The PM Can’t Read Either

Someone doesn’t know what they’re on about.

While looking for links for the last post, I happened upon this article on the Trinidad government website. If the article is true in its entirety, Manning has made himself look very foolish in front of some important folks. Here’s what I’m on about:

Prime Minister Manning wants Trinidad and Tobago to enjoy Most-favoured Nation Status for its petroleum, iron and steel exports to the United States.

The Prime Minister raised this issue in talks with Deputy Secretary of the US Department of Commerce, Samuel Bodman, on Tuesday 16, during his five-day visit to the United States.

Right. I wonder if our dear Patos realizes two things. Firstly, that MFN is an obsolete term. The status referred to is actually called Normal Trade Relations. Secondly, as the new name would suggest, Trinidad, like everywhere in the world other than a handful of communist regimes, already has the status.

This is obviously nitpicking. If this mistake were in a Trinidad newspaper, I wouldn’t really care. I do, however, think it’s a bit important that Manning try as hard as he can to not make himself out to be an ignoramus in front of Department of Commerce officals. How about some basic research next time, guys?
