Happy Independence Day

Posted by clubsodaandsalt on August 31, 2003

It’s been 41 years. I’m not one of those people who claims that nothing has been accomplished. I doubt, for example, that 41 years ago, I would have grown up in nice suburb, gone to an elite school, and made it to an Ivy League university, at least probably not as a black (or indian) kid. So there’s been some progress.

I’m also not part of the “we’re not really independent” crowd. Trinidad’s fortunes may be tied closely to the US and, to a lesser extent, the EU, but it would be absurd if that were not the case. Those are the two biggest economies in the world. We trade with them because it’s in our interest to do so, not because we’ve been “forced” into it, as the Atillah Springers of the world would claim. Having trading partners does not equal “neo-colonialism”. Trinidad is even in the fortunate position of having a rather valuable commodity to trade, as opposed to our caribbean kin who depend on tourism.

Having said all that, there’s certainly much to be done, and frankly, we haven’t been impressive over the first 41 years, particularly given the resources at our disposal. Hopefully the next 4 will see competent government and a responsible elite, since we certainly haven’t tried either of those yet.
